RONNIE JAMES DIO Diagnosed With Stomach Cancer - Nov. 25, 2009
Wendy Dio, the wife and manager of legendary heavy metal vocalist Ronnie James Dio (DIO, HEAVEN & HELL, BLACK SABBATH, RAINBOW), has released the following statement to BLABBERMOUTH.NET:
"Ronnie has been diagnosed with the early stages of stomach cancer. We are starting treatment immediately at the Mayo Clinic. After he kills this dragon, Ronnie will be back on stage, where he belongs, doing what he loves best, performing for his fans.
"Long live rock and roll, long live Ronnie James Dio.
"Thanks to all the friends and fans from all over the world that have sent well wishes. This has really helped to keep his spirit up."
Ronnie James Dio, 67, has performed with ELF, RAINBOW, BLACK SABBATH, and his own band DIO. Other musical projects include the collective fundraiser "Hear 'n Aid". He is widely hailed as one of the most powerful singers in heavy metal, renowned for his consistently powerful voice and for popularizing the "devil's horns" hand gesture in metal culture. He is currently involved with HEAVEN & HELL, a project which also includes former BLACK SABBATH bandmates Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Vinny Appice. Their first studio album, "The Devil You Know", was released on April 28, 2009.
DIO cancelled its European tour last week after Ronnie was taken ill. The band's lineup for the trek was supposed to include WHITESNAKE/ex-DIO axeman Doug Aldrich due to the fact that the group's regular guitarist, Craig Goldy, had prior touring commitments with BUDGIE in Australia.
DIO's last release was the "Holy Diver Live" CD, featuring a performance of the classic "Holy Diver" album in its entirety, from start to finish, recorded live for the very first time in 2005 in front of a sold-out London crowd.

PIXIES "DOOLITTLE" - Hammerstein Ballroom, New York, NY
In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the release of their classic 1989 album Doolittle, the band - Black Francis, Kim Deal, Joey Santiago and David Lovering - will kick off the very special US "Doolittle Tour" at the Palladium in Los Angeles on Wednesday, November 4. The U.S. tour will hit a total of nine cities, including four shows in New York City. Ticket prices and on-sale dates will vary city to city, but some tickets go on sale as early as this Saturday, August 1 and can be purchased at the venues' box offices or online at http://www.ticketmaster.com/ See below for full itinerary and on-sale information.
On this tour, the Pixies will perform all of the songs from Doolittle and its related B-sides, "Weird at My School," "Dancing the Manta Ray," and "Bailey's Walk" among them. Doolittle, the band's third album and the first to chart on Billboard's album charts, includes classics such as "Debaser," "Wave of Mutilation," "Here Comes Your Man," "Hey," and "Gouge Away."
"We wanted to do something special for Doolittle's 20th anniversary," said Black Francis, "and we thought his was a good opportunity to play all of the songs from that album, something we don't normally do at a regular gig."
With the first date in the UK still three months away, the band is brainstorming on Doolittle-related surprises that will also comprise the nights' entertainment.
The US dates will follow the seven-city/12-date "Doolittle" trek of the UK and Europe. Kicking off on September 30 in Dublin, most dates have already sold out, including a four-night stand at London's Brixton Academy, where some 20,000 tickets vanished in about an hour. In addition, on August 29, the band will perform a straight-ahead Pixies set of their classic songs spanning their entire career at the Virgin Festival at Burl's Creek Park outside of Toronto.
The Boston-formed Pixies have been acclaimed as the most influential pioneering band of the late 80s alt/rock movement. Their five studio releases and six years together effectively blazed the path for groups like Nirvana, Radiohead and Pearl Jam to rise to superstardom. They disbanded in 1993 and launched their reunion tour in April, 2004 when virtually every, single date sold out within minutes and fans traveled hundred of miles to attend a show. In post-Pixies years, Black Francis has enjoyed a successful solo career as Frank Black, Kim Deal went on to form the Platinum-selling band the Breeders, Joey Santiago started the band The Martinis and has carved a career as a music composer for film and TV, and David Lovering performs as a magician and continues to drum. The US "Doolittle Tour" will be the band's first American trek since 2005.
The "Doolittle Tour" will coincide with the release of the ultimate Pixies Collector's Set, Minotaur, which ships to purchasers in early November and will hit stores around the same time. To find out more about Minotaur and to order a set, log onto www.ainr.com

Jessie Murphy in the Woods Debut Album Eight Belles: March 9, 2010
A lonely little girl is riding a big brown horse on a crisp autumn day. She doesn't know it yet but the rest of her life will be spent trying to recapture that one perfect moment. Jessie Murphy In The Woods sing the songs that sustain her journey. The group is a New York City based all female "chamber pop" trio comprise of three music teachers. Their sound is Neko Case meets Vampire Weekend meets The Carter Family at a salon hosted jointly by Stevie Nicks and Emily Dickinson.
Eight Belles - the band's debut release - which features 9 tracks as unique as the women themselves, will be released in March 9, 2010. The songs are laced with hauntingly beautiful vocals and dreamlike imagery. Ranging from the gorgeous "New York City Lights" to "When I Am A Horse Again" - a eulogy to a filly who died on the racetrack during 2008's Kentucky Derby, to "God Save Owen Wilson (he's a lot like me)," Jessie Murphy in the Woods are evocative storytellers.
"Creating magic each time they step on stage." Wildy's World
At the helm of this band is singer/guitarist /songwriter Jessie Murphy- a critically acclaimed musician who got her start on the NYC anti-folk scene. The New Yorker once described her as,
"A winning singer-songwriter who wields a bluesy guitar." And, the Village Voice says, "Jessie Murphy has a voice like rippling silk and plays the notes on her guitar bluer than her eyes. "
In 2008, while working on her Masters Degree in Music at Columbia University, she met and befriended Marcia Wood (Wurlitzer, flute, clarinet, harmonica, pan pipes and vocals) and Amy Wood(horn, cajon/percussion, flute, melodica, autoharp and vocals). Jessie, Marcia, and Amy are all NYC public school music teachers (just in case the plethora of musical instruments didn't tip you off.)
Jessie Murphy In The Woods has become a world unto themselves. Jessie enthuses, "The more time we spend and sing together, the more unified we become, and the more we have to give in our performances. We're discovering the realm of our music as it happens." Marcia says, "There's a chamber like quality to our shows, a shared sense of intimacy." On Eight Belles, you hear the sounds and magic of a band coming together. If their music sounds like a fairy tale, it's fitting, for it's in its own glorious place and time. Now saddle up and ride along, it's a long way to forever.

Jason Segel made a surprise appearance at the Swell Season show in LA last night, and premiered a new song!
Jason consulted the Swell Season's Marketa Irglova for songwriting tips and she told him to "include as much personal information as you can."
As you can tell from this new tune - which includes Jason's full acting CV, phone #, and some other (very) personal details - he took the advice to heart.

Orba Squara Sat., Nov 21 at Knitting Factory with Jad Fair
Orba Squara’s second release The Trouble With Flying is out now. Bigger in sound and scope to his debut sunshyness, but the new songs are still based Mitch Davis’ folk-pop that has been compared to Simon & Garfunkel, Iron and Wine, and Cat Stevens. A surprise on the album are performances from Billy Squier on the title track and “Tell Me.”

THEM CROOKED VULTURES SELF-TITLED DEBUT ALBUM OUT NOW
- Daily Dose Pick: Them Crooked Vultures
- 5:14 pm Tuesday Nov 17, 2009 by Doug Levy
Combining Foo Fighter Dave Grohl, Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme, and Led Zeppelin legend John Paul Jones, Them Crooked Vultures are as super as supergroups come.
While the trio’s collaboration has been rumored since 2005, it was only in the last few months that it surfaced fully formed — first through a series of teaser videos, then with live shows, and now with the release of its self-titled debut album, featuring the groove-heavy lead single “New Fang.”
Visit Them Crooked Vultures on MySpace, check out their official site, become a fan on Facebook, and buy the album.
THE PRAIRIE CARTEL "WHERE DID ALL MY PEOPLE GO" RELEASED TODAY On Long Nights, Impossible Odds
"A mix between CSS and the Prodigy with the ubiquitous New Order influence present. From the get-go the band lets the listener know that its party time. "Keep Everybody Warm" has a bit of a Chemical Brothers vibe to it. The mood continues with "Homicide" which has all the panache LCD Soundsystem's "Daft Punk is Playing at My House" and "Jump Like Chemicals" which sounds like a techno remix of Black Sabbath's "Crazy Train". -Surviving The Golden Age
Rearranged, and tweaked into near perfection this remix is courtesy of Chicago newcommers Bright Lights. Cheeky and fun crank this one up, grab it here and feel free to post!
Another sizzling offering comes from the highly sought after Chicago duo Santiago and Bushido’s who’s tech house remix of Beautiful Shadow has been slammed in the local clubs and already a favorite from those who discovered it on the blogs. While Sensory overload says “For us they sound like the lead singer of The National fronting The Klaxons." We think it’s David Gahan’s Personal Jesus roped in with some mighty fine tech-tinged house beats and laced with acid synths. There's an undeniably organic sonic quality to their remix which pays tribute to the original version when the elements expand into spacier regions, but its core always remains punchy and solid.
"Booming guitars freak out! A project both surprisingly accessible and disarmingly melodic. It’s about time!" -The Onion
“What sets The Prairie Cartel apart is an infusion of what we can only describe as the Midwestern work ethic into their tunes. The songs are solid, burly, and imposing in their approach. The members of The Prairie Cartel already have a long history crafting incredible rock and/or roll guitar hooks, so they meld that with their honest appreciation and manipulation of the dance genre to create a sonically monstrous hybrid. This flexibility, and intensity, mixed with the confident delivery of men certain of their pursuits, that makes Where Did All My People Go hold our attention for its duration, and it's those things that send up to the turntable as the needle scratches towards the label, turn the record over, and play it all over again." -Chicagoist
"An intelligent (and frankly quite talented) blend of high-energy electronic, dirty rock and unapologetic funk helps to create the soul of "Suitcase Pimp." Lyrically, Chicago's The Prairie Cartel seem to enjoy a lot of the same subject matter as fellow North-westerners, Electric Six. The music, however, is more pulse quickening. And while they're not afraid to wear their dj roots on their sleeves; The Prairie Cartel uses it's collective rock band past to create a danceable rock band future.” -The Daily Thread
Where Did All My People Go is set for release on November 17th

EELS’ END TIMES OUT JANUARY 19
Vagrant Records will release EELS’ eighth studio album End Times on January 19. EELS is the ever-changing project of singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mark Oliver Everett (aka E). End Times follows on the heels of EELS’ critically acclaimed 2009 release Hombre Lobo, hailed by Vanity Fair as “anti-anthems that get your dopamine pumping instead of your fist” and praised by Rolling Stone for its “muddy roadhouse rockers.” Largely self-recorded on an old four track tape machine in the basement of Everettt’s Los Angeles home, the “end times” he writes about isn’t “Mayan calendar conspiracy theory bullshit,” says Everett, but, “the state of the desperate times we live in. The bottom line-ness of it all.”
While Hombre Lobo was written from the point of view of a fictional character (namely, the Dog Faced Boy of EELS’ 2001 album Souljacker), End Times is purely real life as Everett sees it: a “divorce album” with a modern twist. He equates his personal loss with the world he lives in losing its integrity. This isn’t Everett’s first break-up record. His 1993 solo effort, Broken Toy Shop, chronicled the broken heart of a young man in his twenties. End Times focuses on the loss of a middle-aged man growing as an artist. The loss has more weight.
As for the timing of the release, “I felt guilty about the long gap between the last two albums so I’m making up for lost time,” Everett says. The longest gap between EELS albums (four years between the 2005 release Blinking Lights and Other Revelations and the 2009 Hombre Lobo) is being followed by the shortest (six months between Hombre Lobo and End Times).
During the four years prior to Hombre Lobo Everett embarked on a number of projects including his acclaimed book Things the Grandchildren Should Know and the BBC produced multiple-award winning Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives documentary film about Everett and his quantum physicist father, Hugh Everett III, which was broadcast on PBS’ Nova series in the fall of 2008. Everett says he’s now “back to my real job: making music full time.”

FROM RILO KILEY TO MYSTIC VALLEY: JASON BOESEL ANNOUNCES SOLO DEBUT (OUT 1/12/10)
'Hustler's Son' Produced By Jason Boesel and Jonathan Wilson (Elvis Costello / Jenny Lewis) With All-Star Guests
For the last 15 years, LA-based drummer Jason Boesel has been planted firmly behind the kit, keeping time for the likes of Rilo Kiley, Bright Eyes, The Elected, and more recently, Conor Oberst and The Mystic Valley Band. Boesel was inspired to pick up the guitar and write his own record after his friends raved about the first song he ever wrote: 'Hustler's Son.' Now, a few studio sessions later, Jason Boesel announces his solo debut for Team Love Records: 'Hustler's Son,' out January 12, 2010.
Boesel headed into the studio in March of 2009 with a core group of collaborators: Mystic Valley Band member Nik Freitas, Blake Mills (Band of Horses, Julian Casablancas), and producer Jonathan Wilson (Elvis Costello 'Momofuku' and Jenny Lewis 'Acid Tongue'). He eventually sought out the additional talents of Benmont Tench (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers), Orenda Fink (O + S, Azure Ray), David Rawlings (Gillian Welch, Old Crow Medicine Show), Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes), and fellow Rilo Kiley member Blake Sennett.
The result is an 11-song Americana album filled with powerful imagery and a sound that brings new colors to the sonic palette of country-folk greats like Townes Van Zandt, mid-'70s California rock, and the alt-country scene of today.
Listen to the first single- "Hand Of God" - available for download here: http://bit.ly/JBoesel_
While "Hand of God" is nearest to Boesel's breezy alt-country leanings, the entirety of 'Hustler's Son' is a road trip of an aural and emotional experience. Boesel isn't shy to admit his soft spot for the Southern California sound, but his sonic inspirations are as diverse as the places he's visited on the road. The music proves it: Dark "Black Waves" rolls in with West Palm Beach's "hurricane sand" and psychotropic guitars, "French Kissing" rocks to allusions of Santa Barbara's shores, "Burned Out And Busted" finds Boesel stranded in the desert, and the insatiable jam "I Got The Reason #1" - a fan favorite played by Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band on tour- leaves Jason in the lobby of a hotel, waiting for the next surprise.
Sure, Boesel owes a lot to the road that inspired a moving album with many startling turns, but he'll return the favor in February on a national tour in support of 'Hustler's Son.'
