DREDG and THE DEAR HUNTER performing in NYC 5/19

The Dear Hunter.
Dredg.

dredg’s new album, CHUCKLES AND MR. SQUEEZY, will be released May 3 on Superball Music. It’s the highly anticipated follow-up to 2009’s critically acclaimed THE PARIAH, THE PARROT, THE DELUSION (Ohlone Recordings through Warner Music Group's Independent Label Group), which was inspired in part by Salman Rushdie’s essay “Imagine There's No Heaven: A Letter to the 6 Billionth Citizen.”

It took the band--Gavin Hayes (vocals, guitars), Drew Roulette (bass, samples), Mark Engles (guitars) and Dino Campanella (drums, keyboards)--almost eight months of exchanging song-material via e-mail to finish CHUCKLES AND MR. SQUEEZY--a process producer Dan The Automator (Gorillaz, Kasabian, etc.) was also involved in right from the early beginnings. His influence becomes most apparent in the songs “The Tent,” “Sun Goes Down” and “Before it Began” where he also took an active part in the songwriting. Even though there is a lot of variation in tones and tempo, singer Gavin Hayes sums up the general sound of CHUCKLES AND MR. SQUEEZY as “Dark Pop”: a dark undertone is giving the songs some kind of a contemplative self-analysis – but in the end the album is still characterized by its optimism. “There is a certain darkness to it,” Gavin agrees. “A lot of our music is ultimately positive but can be conceived as sad as well. It has these two sides that oppose each other, but manage to reconcile in the music.”

Singer/guitarist/lyricist Gavin Hayes is an adopted child that recently found his biological family. Last year, he did some research online and ended up finding his half-sister on Facebook. Since then he has met about 30 cousins and half-cousins. His half-sister is also in the music business, interestingly enough. She’s an opera singer who has performed with the Buffalo Philharmonic, as well as other orchestras across the country. A few songs on the new album were written about Gavin’s personal experiences….“Before It Began” is inspired by meeting his biological family, while “The Thought Of Losing You” and “Upon Returning” are about Gavin’s adopted sister being at war and dealing with severe shell shock.

The Dear Hunter will be touring in support of their forthcoming nine-EP collection, THE COLOR SPECTRUM, which is due out June 7 on Triple Crown Records in a variety of formats (Full Length CD, Limited Edition Deluxe Vinyl Box Set, Full Length Vinyl and each song as an individual digital version). THE COLOR SPECTRUM consists of songs inspired by the colors of the spectrum, specifically RED, ORANGE, YELLOW, GREEN, BLUE, INDIGO andVIOLET, with WHITE and BLACK being included as bookends. Casey Crescenzo, mastermind of The Dear Hunter, completed the EPs while traveling the U.S., documenting every step of the process. The collection will feature collaborations with several producers and musicians, including Manchester Orchestra, Brendan Brown from The Receiving End of Sirens, Mike Watts (who has worked with As Tall As Lions and he mixed The Dear Hunter’s 2009 album, ACT III: LIFE AND DEATH), and Steve Haigler (Brand New, As Tall As Lions, Quicksand).

Alternative Press had praised ACT III: LIFE AND DEATH: “Casey Crescenzo, the multi-talented fountainhead of The Dear Hunter, assembled a masterwork in ACT III: LIFE AND DEATH, ostensibly the midsection of his ongoing, six-act tale of a born-loser boy who falls for a whore. LIFE AND DEATH expands the Danny Elfman-does-gypsy-vaudeville sound pioneered on TDH’s two previous albums, dedicating more space to better explore the densely layered vocal swathes (‘Writing On A Wall’) and polyrhythmic grooves (‘In Cauda Venenum’) for which Crescenzo’s become known. He flexes some serious harmonic muscle on the lachrymose ‘Saved’ and the aching, album-closing trifecta ‘Son,’ ‘Father’ and ‘Life and Death.’ If you’d prefer to simply commence wetting your shorts, jump to the 4:15 mark of ‘Thief’ and listen through to the end of ‘Mustard Gas.’ F**king bravo, man. 4-1/2 out of 5 stars.”

Cloud Nothings is confirmed to open for Titus Andronicus at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City on March 6

With Cloud Nothings' high-energy live show and killer guitar riffage, this should be a fun experience for all. More tour info is atwww.myspace.com/cloudnothings

Last week Cloud Nothings released a split cassette with Chicago's excellent Campfires band on Bathetic Records. Order info is here: http://www.batheticrecords.com/2010/02/bath014-cloud-nothings-campfires-split.html.

This week I Rock Cleveland had a great review of Cloud Nothings' Turning On album, where he realized that this wasn't just another lo-fi bedroom rock band: "Just as I thought one, not quite ready for prime-time Californian with poor spelling and improper capitalization had gone out and ruined lo-fi rock for good, in comes this young Clevelander, Dylan Baldi, recording as Cloud Nothings with his one microphone and his nine irresistible pop songs, and, all of a sudden, lo-fi doesn't seem quite so dead. Rather, it seems as vibrant as that day when Robert Pollard first brought together his band and 100 bottles of beer in his Dayton, Ohio garage."

If you're sick of the lo-fi movement, ease your mind by listening to this record and realizing the skills that go into the songwriting and melody that lies underneath the fuzz. It's not what you may think, despite the descriptions. I urge you to do yourself a favor and check it out.

Rilo Kiley's Jason Boesel (w/ Dawes as back-up) playing with Dawes and Cory Chisel at the Bowery Ballroom this Friday

Jason was recently Paste Magazine.com's "Artist of the Day" - They chatted with him about his new role as bandleader, how Conor Oberst stole his chorus line, and his secret crush on Taylor Swift: http://bit.ly/cuGKpM

About Jason Boesel:
For the last 15 years, LA-based drummer Jason Boesel has been planted firmly behind the kit, keeping time for the likes of Rilo Kiley, Bright Eyes, The Elected, and more recently, Conor Oberst and The Mystic Valley Band. Boesel was inspired to pick up the guitar and write his own record after his friends raved about the first song he ever wrote: 'Hustler's Son.' Now, a few studio sessions later with an a-list group (Benmont Tench, Dave Rawlings, Blake Sennett), Jason Boesel released his solo debut for Team Love Records: 'Hustler's Son,' out now.

JASON BOESEL STEPS TO CENTER STAGE WITH "INCREDIBLE" (DAYTROTTER) TEAM LOVE DEBUT 'HUSTLER'S SON' IN JAN

Until recently, Jason Boesel sat behind the drum kit for artists like Rilo Kiley and Bright Eyes, but he's "ready to step out front" (Paste) in 2010 with his solo debut 'Hustler's Son,' set for Jan 12 release via Team Love. The album features top shelf guests like David Rawlings, Benmont Tench, Orenda Fink, and Boesel's Rilo Kiley bandmate Blake Sennett, among others. Critics are already responding:

"Incredible.... sinewy and warm harmony lines" - Daytrotter

"Jason Boesel is ready to step out front... 'Hustler's Son' is full of hushed and catchy country rock" - Paste Magazine

"For every Phil Collins and Don Henley, we occasionally get a Dave Grohl." - The Pitch: Kansas City

"A deft combination of grit and twang" - Direct Current Music

Earlier this month, Daytrotter recorded three unplugged versions of songs from 'Hustler's Son' (two of which are premieres) at Elliott Smith's old studio. Listen to these songs and read the story of the Daytrotter session here:

Screaming Females - 02.06.10 - New York, NY @ Bowery Ballroom (Don Giovanni Showcase)

2009 will go down as the year that everyone—EVERYONE—started to take notice of Screaming Females in the wake of the release of their third LP (and their first on a label of any kind), Power Move (Don Giovanni, April, 2009). From their first TV appearances (dancing with puppets on Chicago's cult public access TV show, "Chic-a-Go-Go", then making their national TV debut as a musical guest on MTV's "It's On! With Alexa Chung"), first multi-page national print media press and having lead Female Marissa Paternoster be named "Best Shredder in New York City 2009" by the Village Voice to being the band that everyone from Dinosaur Jr., Throwing Muses, Dead Weather and Arctic Monkeys personally asked to tour with, 2009's been quite the weird and exciting year for Screaming Females. After all, they're doing exactly what they've done, the way they've always done it...organically, with friends. It's just that now all of these people are noticing how amazing they are. And they can, y'know, quit their day jobs in lieu of touring all the time and recording new material with both their own band and their side projects because of it. Amen to that, right?

Prior to working with Don Giovanni, itself a staple of the New Brunswick, NJ scene, the band did everything themselves, the way you're supposed to before it's time for a label to step in and help facilitate things. This collection, Singles, is six songs from four now-rare Females 7"s, and comes with liner notes written by drummer Jarrett Dougherty and images of the original 7" artwork penned by Paternoster (did you know she does all the band's artwork? It's true. Bassist King Mike draws, too, but that's another story for another day). If you are one of the many who have just this year been introduced to Screaming Females, Singles is here to take you to the School of Deep Cuts.

MAE NYC area shows

MAE just released (M)ORNING physically in stores late last month after selling-out a limited edition run on their tour earlier this spring. You should have received an advance copy. The enhanced disc, is the first of three separate 8-song collections of music the band is releasing in 2009/10--(M)ORNING, (A)FTERNOON, and (E)VENING--and includes a special DVD documentary which explains the evolution of the group’s “12 Songs, 12 Months, 1 Goal” campaign. The project evolved from digital to include physical releases via the band’s own imprint Cell Records which is now in partnership with Tooth & Nail for distribution.

MAE left Capitol Records to blaze their own trail. Without limitations, the band found a different way to do the two things they love most: creating music and helping others. They created “12 Songs, 12 Months, 1 Goal: Make a Difference,” and decided to release(M)ORNING, (A)FTERNOON, and (E)VENING as well as partner with charitable and humanitarian organizations to make a direct and positive impact in the world. So far in 2009, MAE has raised over $55,000 and has partnered with both DonorsChoose and Habitat For Humanity.

The trio fully funded the single family home through fans purchasing the new music off (M)ORNING with a minimum donation of $1.00 through the band’s official website http://www.whatismae.com/. For (A)FTERNOON songs which are up now, MAE has aligned with Donors Choose (www.donorschoose.org) to help teachers across the country directly get the supplies they are lacking for their classrooms. Fans can listen to the songs streaming for free at www.whatismae.com

MAE’s greater purpose has always been to provide a fantastic live experience--a Multisensory Aesthetic Experience designed to cultivate growth and endless possibility. Fans can expect their stunning 3D projection visuals, their rub and smell scented CDs and now the sensory stimulation of touch the combination of these elements will create a unique experience allowing fans to be transported to another level.

The DEAR HUNTER land in NYC on Wednesday, October 28 at the Bowery Ballroom

THE DEAR HUNTER--Casey Crescenzo (singer/pianist/guitarist/lyricist/multi-instrumentalist/producer), Andy Wildrick (guitar/engineer), Erick Serna (guitar), Nick Crescenzo (drums), and Nate Patterson (bass)--are launching a headlining tour in support of their critically acclaimed sophomore album, ACT III: LIFE AND DEATH, which came out June 23 on Triple Crown Records.

They land in NYC on Wednesday, October 28 at the Bowery Ballroom.

Here’s a live video shot in New York City on July 10 of “He Said He Had A Story” from the new album:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qQgy1gNpWM&feature=related

And to give you an idea of their acoustic side, check out this clip of “Mustard Gas,” also from the new album:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZ_dA6xh7Xo

And one last clip, a video update from Casey Crescenzo about the launch of the upcoming tour dates and the forthcoming video for “What It Means To Be Alone”:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWAEaqmFd28

A continuum of the humanistic tale following an unnamed central character, ACT III: LIFE AND DEATH dives into the fractures of our nature--exploring generally darker subject matter than the previous two chapters of the Dear Hunter saga. At the core, the record examines the social landscape of war, set in a parallel universe during the time of World War One. As you delve deeper into the story, the album sifts through the heart and mind of its main character, known only as "the boy." He is thrust into battle at the height of the conflict, and encounters everything from an angel of death to his twin brother. With every song, a step in the boy's journey is represented. The album begins with the epic and haunting choir vocals of "Writing on a Wall," reflecting the cryptic message our hero sees written on a crumbled wall during battle. He is instructed to "come away...where the ground is red, and you need a mask to breathe." This chilling message summons the boy toward his fate, just as it heralds the listener to invest themselves fully in the listening experience that lay ahead. The powerful opening track serves as a call to arms for both our hero and the listener.

Check out these rave reviews:

“Casey Crescenzo, the multi-talented fountainhead of THE DEAR HUNTER, assembled a masterwork in ACT III: LIFE AND DEATH, ostensibly the midsection of his ongoing, six-act tale of a born-loser boy who falls for a whore.
--Casey Lynch, Alternative Press, August 2009

“…dramatic, dissonant, style-shifting rock…baroque orchestral arrangements, Broadway-esque piano ballads and everything in between. One minute DEAR HUNTER leader Casey Crescenzo is drenched in a backdrop of lush harmonies (‘Writing on a Wall’), the next he's roaring through a wall of bombastic guitars and horns (‘In Cauda Venenum’).”
--Evan Lucy, Billboard, July 11, 2009

“…a great example of getting away with a ton of bold guitar work that is always in service of the song…There is a grand theatricality to ACT III that brings to mind Oingo Boingo, Queen and Jellyfish…this is such a great record.”
--Matt Blackett, Guitar Player, September 2009

BLIND PILOT EXPANDS FALL TOUR WITH NEW HEADLINING DATES

“…the same distinctly Pacific Northwest mellow of regional progenitors like

Death Cab For Cutie and Elliott Smith.” — The Onion

“…a bright and simple quality that’s undeniably captivating.” —WXPN’s “World Café”

“Soaring, solid genius…their success is all but guaranteed.” —Seattle Weekly

Rising Portland-based band Blind Pilot will expand their fall tour with 18 new dates beginning November 13 in Burlington, VT. Acclaimed singer-songwriter Laura Veirs will open for Blind Pilot on the new dates, which include performances at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom, Philadelphia’s World Café Live and Chicago’s Lincoln Hall. The band is touring in support of their full-length debut 3 Rounds and a Sound, which earned the band performances on national radio (NPR’s “Morning Edition” and “All Songs Considered”), national television (“Last Call with Carson Daly”) and a spot on this year’s bill for the esteemed NPR Music Showcase at SXSW in Austin, TX. The album, available now on Expunged Records, received praise from USA Today, the Boston Globe, the New York Post and the Philadelphia Inquirer, which calls the music “…a rustic reverie.” Additionally, the track “Go On, Say It” was recently selected as the Single of the Week on iTunes.

Blind Pilot will begin the first leg of their tour with special guests The Low Anthem next month and recently wrapped up a summer tour, which included opening slots for The Decemberists, Andrew Bird and the acclaimed British rock band Gomez. Blind Pilot also recently played sets at this year’s Lollapalooza, Sasquatch!, Rocky Mountain Folks Festival and Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival and will perform at the upcoming Sisters Folk Festival and headline Portland’s Crystal Ballroom as part of Musicfest NW. Please see below for a full list of dates.

Nothing spotlights Blind Pilot’s building success like their touring history. In 2007, Blind Pilot’s founding members Israel Nebeker (vocals, guitar) and Ryan Dobrowski (drums) embarked on a West Coast bicycle tour playing mostly to unfamiliar listeners at small-town venues. The venturesome duo has since come a long way from their grassroots inception. This summer, Nebeker and Dobrowski rounded out Blind Pilot’s lineup as a six-piece with fellow Oregonians Luke Ydstie (upright bass, backing vocals), Kati Claborn (banjo, dulcimer, backing vocals), Ian Krist (vibraphones) and Dave Jorgensen (keyboards, trumpet).

Blitzen Trapper & Plants and Animals - Bowery Ballroom - Feb 27 2009

Blitzen Trapper brought down the house at the Bowery Ballroom in NYC. The band played a tight set opened up by Plants and Animals. It was a great show. The best moments came when the crown actually shut the fuck up long enough for us to hear the band. Note to self. No more 18 and under shows.

The Airborne Toxic Event - Bowery Ballroom - March 11, 2009

The Airborne Toxic Event put on an amazing show last night at the Bowery Ballroom. There was much more energy in the live show than reflected in the bands studio recordings. Here's a bunch of pictures from front and center.
