Sid! - By Those Who Really Knew Him

An intimate, full-length, 80 minute documentary on Sid's life to mark 30 years since his death. Plus 10 track audio CD, booklet and more!
Odeon Entertainment and MVD Visual are proud to announce the release of Sid! - By Those Who Really Knew Him on November 17th in North America.

Cover ArtThis package, the first intimate full-length 80 minute documentary on Sid's life, marks 30 years since his death from a heroin overdose (he was just 21 years old). Many of those closest to Sid speak for the very first time about this true punk icon who burned out, but never sold out.

This brand new documentary, in association with ITN Archive, charts the fall and rise of Sid Vicious from punk's hero to society's cultural icon of the twentieth century.

Sid's short and controversial life is profiled with interviews fromJah Wobble (childhood friend, founder PIL), Steve Severin(Siouxsie and the Banshees), David Vanian (The Damned),Malcolm McLaren (Sex Pistols Manager), Viv Albertine(Flatmate, The Slits), Ron Watts (100 Club), Glen Matlock(Sex Pistols), Rat Scabies (The Damned), Caroline Coon(Writer and Artist), Vivienne Westwood (Sex Designer), Marco Pirroni (Adam & The Ants), John Tiberi (Sex Pistols Tour Manager), and many more of Sid's close friends.

Featuring previously unseen archive footage and filmed in HD, this new documentary provides the most definitive and intimate life story of the punk hero who truly lived his life with chaos and anarchy. Fuelled with a soundtrack of Sid's own music, this is the faithful telling of Sid's life story by those who really knew him.

In addition to the DVD documentary, this special collector's edition includes a 10 track CD of Sid live in New York's, and a biography booklet profile by best-selling music author Mark Paytress.

St. Vincent News September 2009

Hi!

Tomorrow we are beginning our tour with Andrew Bird in the US! I'm very excited to let you all know about the very cool tour video we are producing on this run. AL JOURGENSEN ANNOUNCES “CHRISTMAS SONG” AND COLLABORATIONS WITH MISSION UK GUITARIST MARK THWAITE

REVCO LUBRICATOUR CELEBRATES LIFE OF PAUL RAVEN

REVCO SEX-O MIXXX-O RELEASE DROPS 9/29 WITH BONUS REMIX

JOURGENSEN SPECIAL GUEST ARTISTS AT CHICAGO AND NEW YORK SHOWS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: El Paso, TX September 28, 2009
While his prodigal step-child, RevCo is out on the North American LuBriCaTouR promoting the upcoming 13th Planet release “Sex-O MiXXX-O”, Uncle Al Jourgensen has hooked up with guitarist Mark Thwaite (Mission UK, Peter Murphy, Tricky, Mob Research) in the studio, collaborating on several projects simultaneously. Jourgensen and Thwaite, both long-time friends of Killing Joke/Ministry bassist Paul Raven, who passed away October 20, 2007, joined forces recently at Jourgensen’s 13th Planet compound in Texas on RevCo projects and another Jourgensen side project.

PHOTO: Andrew Davidson

Thwaite brings his remix skills to RevCo’s upcoming “Sex-O MiXXX-O” on Abundant Redundancy (Dambuster Metalmorphosis Mix), to be released digital only as a bonus supplement to the physical release. Thwaite’s previous remix credits include Gary Numan, Methodman and Licky to name a few.

Additionally, Thwaite collaborated with Ministry/RevCo guitarist Sin Quirin on Filthy Senoritas, for the upcoming RevCo release slated for Spring 2010.

But the crowning jewel of the Jourgensen/Thwaite collaboration is the newly penned as yet untitled Christmas Song to be released via digital download exclusively this Thanksgiving. 13th Planet will release a digital stream of the track October 20th, 2009 to celebrate the memory of their “favorite pirate” Paul Raven on Ministry’s Myspacewww.myspace.com/ministrymusic.

In tandem, RevCo’s performance October 20th in Jacksonville, FL will host a video collage of Paul Raven’s life by long-time friend, Dean Karr at the RevCo LuBriCaTouR show. New live photos by Steffan Chirazi of RevCo’s San Francisco show can be seen here [link and/or graphic] Jourgensen joins his band of merry freaks, RevCo, for Special Guest Artists on October 6th in Chicago at House of Blues and October 17th at NYC’s Irving Plaza.

Charles Spearing - The Happiness Project - NYC Nov. 28th and 29th

( Credit // Norman Wong )

About The Happiness Project
Arts & Crafts will be releasing The Happiness Project on February 14. Spearin, best known for his work with Toronto-based bands Do Make Say Think and Broken Social Scene, has been performing samples of The Happiness Project live during BSS concerts this past year, offering insight into the inspiration and concept of the album which was arranged, recorded and developed over the past few years in his home studio as well working with his long time collaborator Ohad Benchetrit at his studio, Th’ Schvitz.

In the album’s liner notes, Charles took time to write a bit of an explanation on the idea behind the project.

“These are my neighbours. My wife and I have two little kids and live in downtown Toronto.” Spearin explains, “In the summertime, all the kids in the neighbourhood play outside together and everyone is out on their porch enjoying each other’s company, telling stories and sharing thoughts. A year or so ago I began inviting some of them over to the house for a casual interview vaguely centered around the subject of happiness. In some cases we never broached the subject directly but none-the-less my friends began to call it my “Happiness Project”.

After each interview Spearin would listen back to the recording and examine the thoughts expressed. In addition, he noticed a natural melody and cadence to the speaking voices of his neighbours as they each discussed their views on “happiness”. “It has always been interesting to me how we use sounds to convey concepts,” says Spearin.“Normally, we don’t pay any attention to the movement of our lips and tongue, and the rising and falling of our voices as we toss our thoughts back and forth to each other,“ he continues, “We just talk and listen. The only time we pay attention to these qualities is in song.

With The Happiness Project, Spearin blurs the line between speaking and singing - life and art - and writes music based on these accidental melodies. With the help of some of his musician friends, Charles plays the instruments to match these natural neighbourhood melodies inspired by thought and happiness and then, as Charles concludes, “I arranged them as though they were songs. All of the melodies on this album are the melodies of every day life.

The Incident charts Stateside!

A glass of bubbly stuff should be raised in honour of the band today following the news that The Incident is at #25 in the Top 200 in the American charts!

For those folks who like to keep scores on these things, FOABP copped the #59 slot, whilst Deadwing came in at #132 in the Top 200.

A great result considering the problems facing both the recording industry and the overall economy at the moment! Well done PT and thanks to all the fans who went out and bought it.

Yo La Tengo - Friday September 25 Roseland (NYC) w/Black Lips

About Popular Songs:

Most of us fans have a silly tendency to look at our favorite musicians as being the smartest people in the world. Within their lyrics we know we’ll find the answers to everything, if we just look hard enough. In truth, most musicians are no smarter than any of us—often much less so. You can find many books on this subject.

Georgia, Ira and James of Yo La Tengo are exceptions to this rule, and Popular Songs, their 12th (or 14th, depending on what and how you count) album is the proof. Because when this new and dramatically unimproved world puts the hard questions to Yo La Tengo, they go Socratic as hell, swaggeringly, reassuringly, honestly telling us that all they know is they know nothing. They do not know why that sunbeam comes through the window when you are determined to sulk; they do not know just how are we going to make it, anyway?

Down to their fingernails, Yo La Tengo understand that the dichotomy has never been love & hate—this life is about love & fear. And fear makes you run and hide, sit on your ass, do nothing but be consumed by it. To restate the obvious, Yo La Tengo are not afraid. They walk bravely forward, into the unknown, hand in hand. And 12 (or 14) albums in, they may just be hitting their stride.

They land in NYC on Wednesday, October 28 at the Bowery Ballroom.

A continuum of the humanistic tale following an unnamed central character, ACT III: LIFE AND DEATH dives into the fractures of our nature--exploring generally darker subject matter than the previous two chapters of the Dear Hunter saga. At the core, the record examines the social landscape of war, set in a parallel universe during the time of World War One. As you delve deeper into the story, the album sifts through the heart and mind of its main character, known only as "the boy." He is thrust into battle at the height of the conflict, and encounters everything from an angel of death to his twin brother. With every song, a step in the boy's journey is represented. The album begins with the epic and haunting choir vocals of "Writing on a Wall," reflecting the cryptic message our hero sees written on a crumbled wall during battle. He is instructed to "come away...where the ground is red, and you need a mask to breathe." This chilling message summons the boy toward his fate, just as it heralds the listener to invest themselves fully in the listening experience that lay ahead. The powerful opening track serves as a call to arms for both our hero and the listener.

Check out these rave reviews:

“Casey Crescenzo, the multi-talented fountainhead of THE DEAR HUNTER, assembled a masterwork in ACT III: LIFE AND DEATH, ostensibly the midsection of his ongoing, six-act tale of a born-loser boy who falls for a whore. LIFE AND DEATH expands the Danny Elfman-does-gypsy-vaudeville sound pioneered on TDH’s two previous albums, dedicating more space to better explore the densely layered vocal swathes (‘Writing On A Wall’) and polyrhythmic grooves (‘In Cauda Venenum’) for which Crescenzo’s become known. He flexes some serious harmonic muscle on the lachrymose ‘Saved’ and the aching, album-closing trifecta ‘Son,’ ‘Father’ and ‘Life and Death.’ If you’d prefer to simply commence wetting your shorts, jump to the 4:15 mark of ‘Thief’ and listen through to the end of ‘Mustard Gas.’ F**king bravo, man. 4-1/2 out of 5 stars.”
--Casey Lynch, Alternative Press, August 2009

“…dramatic, dissonant, style-shifting rock…baroque orchestral arrangements, Broadway-esque piano ballads and everything in between. One minute DEAR HUNTER leader Casey Crescenzo is drenched in a backdrop of lush harmonies (‘Writing on a Wall’), the next he's roaring through a wall of bombastic guitars and horns (‘In Cauda Venenum’).”
--Evan Lucy, Billboard, July 11, 2009

“…a great example of getting away with a ton of bold guitar work that is always in service of the song…There is a grand theatricality to ACT III that brings to mind Oingo Boingo, Queen and Jellyfish…this is such a great record.”
--Matt Blackett, Guitar Player, September 2009

COMING TO NYC: DREDG on 10/1 with Salman Rushdie

DREDG--Gavin Hayes (vocals, guitar), Drew Roulette (bass, Moog, Speak & Spell, samples), Mark Engles (guitar) and Dino Campanella (drums, keyboards)--will be performing at a special fundraising event with Salman Rushdie on Thursday, October 1 at 7:30pm at Housing Works Bookstore Café (126 Crosby Street). Information can be found at http://www.housingworks.org/events/detail/spin-presents-liner-notes-with-salman-rushdie-and-dredg/

The band's fourth album, THE PARIAH, THE PARROT, THE DELUSION which came out June 9 on their Ohlone Recordings through Warner Music Group's Independent Label Group, was inspired in part by Salman Rushdie’s essay “Imagine There's No Heaven: A Letter to the 6 Billionth Citizen” and is packaged and constructed like a letter, its songs and instrumental interludes connected by eerie, evocative Wurlitzer piano-and-voice segments. Diverse and textured, these intentional imperfections allow some of Dredg’s mellowest recorded moments to mingle with some of their harshest. Salman Rushdie will be reading the essay at the event.

Fall tour dates to be announced

The Mary Onettes will release 'Puzzles', taken from their sophomore album 'Islands', released November 3rd on Sweden'sLabrador Records, home to The Legends, The Radio Dept. and Little Big Adventure to name a few.

The Mary Onettes’ critically acclaimed debut was described as the perfect mix between A-ha and The Jesus and Mary Chain. Now they are back with a grandiose new album. Imagine a Swedish equivalent of The National on a diet of speed, Planet Earth DVDs, and 80’s guitar pop singles and you’ll have a vague idea of how amazing this is.

The year 2008 was characterized by the deaths of close relatives and friends of Philip Ekström (singer and songwriter of the band) and on 'Islands' he’s put more focus on the lyrics. 'The Disappearance of My Youth' and 'Cry For Love' were written in his girlfriend’s mother’s estate and most of the songs on the album are highly marked by his time in Stockholm after her death.

“The songs are almost too personal and I’ve had a hard time playing them for friends. It’s like all I want to do is keep them to myself.”(Philip). The lyrics are retrospective with themes of lost youth, transience and death.

The first single 'Dare' was no. 1 on Elbo.ws, 'Pleasure Songs' from the debut was Single of the Week on iTunes with half a million downloads. The Mary Onettes have had two songs feature in the TV-series Grey’s Anatomy and their first single on Labrador was tagged Best New Music on Pitchfork. Things have been going well since The Mary Onettes signed with Labrador, but the band has certainly had their ups and downs.

”The title ‘Islands’ came up because I see the tracks on the album as small islands in different shapes and forms where every song is like a record of it’s very own. Johan on Labrador Records suggested the same title without having heard me mentioning the idea, so that was a coincidence too good not to pursue.” (Philip)
